Enterprise BPM + AI Agents: Architecture Patterns for Human-in-the-Loop Workflows

AI agents that work autonomously are impressive. AI agents that know when to ask a human are useful. The difference lies in the architecture. In this article, we present three patterns we use in production systems — with Enterprise BPM as the orchestration platform and AI agents as intelligent actors.

Why Human-in-the-Loop?

The question isn't whether AI makes mistakes. It does. The question is whether your system is prepared for it. Human-in-the-loop doesn't mean a human checks every AI decision. That would be neither efficient nor scalable. It means the system has clear rules for when a human gets involved. These rules aren't blanket — they're context-dependent: for a routine case with 99% confidence, no human is needed. For a credit decision over 500,000 euros at 78% confidence, one is.

Pattern 1: Confidence-Threshold Routing

The simplest and most common pattern. Each AI agent evaluates its own certainty on a scale. If the value is above the defined threshold, the agent continues autonomously. If it falls below, a Human Task is automatically created in the workflow. The implementation: the AI agent returns a confidence score alongside its result. A gateway in the workflow evaluates the score against the configurable threshold. When it falls short, a Human Task is created — not with a bare assignment, but with full context: input data, processing steps, result, confidence, alternative suggestions. The threshold is configurable per process step and adjusted during live operations.

Pattern 2: Multi-Agent Orchestration

For complex tasks, we deploy multiple specialized agents. One researches, one validates, one produces the result. The workflow orchestrates the collaboration — including conflict detection. When two agents arrive at different results, the workflow escalates automatically. The strength of this pattern: each agent has a clearly defined area of responsibility. This makes the system testable, debuggable, and explainable. When a result is wrong, we know which agent made which decision at which step.

Pattern 3: Regulatory Gate

In regulated industries, there are decisions that always require a human — regardless of the AI's confidence. Loan approvals above certain thresholds, medical diagnoses, compliance sign-offs. The Regulatory Gate pattern defines these mandatory checkpoints as immutable process steps. The AI prepares the decision — gathering data, assessing risks, making recommendations — but the decision itself is made by a human. This sounds like a brake. It's not. In practice, this pattern still drastically shortens decision time because humans no longer need to research — they only need to decide.

Implementation Tips

Start with Pattern 1. It covers 80% of use cases. Set thresholds conservatively and loosen them based on production data. Log every confidence score and every human decision. This dataset is invaluable for threshold optimization. Design the Human Task UI carefully. The human must understand within 30 seconds why they're being asked and what the AI suggests. Test the escalation. Not the happy path. The escalation.
